On July 13, 2026, Microsoft will permanently lock editing in Office 2019 for Mac. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote all become view-only. You can still open and print files, but you cannot type, save, or create anything new. This is hardcoded into the software — no workaround exists, and reinstalling won’t help.
Priority 1: Check Your Mac First
Everything else depends on your macOS version.
Go to Apple menu → About This Mac and check your version:
- macOS 12 (Monterey) or later — you can upgrade to Microsoft 365 or Office 2024
- macOS 11 or older (typically 2017 Macs or earlier) — you cannot install new Office versions; your only path is the free browser-based Office
This single check determines every decision below.
Priority 2: Back Up Your Files Immediately
Before anything else, copy all your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files to OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, or an external drive. Do this today. If something goes wrong during an upgrade, you want your documents safe and accessible.
Priority 3: Choose Your Upgrade Path
If your Mac supports macOS 12+:
Microsoft 365 Personal costs Rs.5,999 per year (roughly Rs.499/month) and is the best overall choice. It covers unlimited devices, includes 1TB of cloud storage, Outlook, OneNote, and continuous updates. If you want to share with family, Microsoft 365 Family covers up to six people for ₹8,999/year — roughly Rs.1,500 per person annually, which is excellent value.
If subscriptions frustrate you, Office 2024 is a one-time purchase around Rs.12,999, but note it excludes Outlook and OneNote and receives no feature updates.
If your Mac is too old for macOS 12:
Use Microsoft Office on the web at office.com — completely free, requires only a Microsoft account, and works in any browser. You get full editing for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with 5GB of cloud storage. The only trade-off is that it requires an internet connection and lacks advanced features like macros.
If you’re a student:
Check eligibility at microsoft.com/education. Many Indian universities offer the full Microsoft 365 suite free with a school email address. This is worth verifying before spending anything.
Priority 4: Install and Verify Before the Deadline
Don’t install on July 12 and hope for the best. Complete your upgrade by June 30 at the latest. After installing, confirm it’s working: open a document, make an edit, save it, and check that your version shows 16.80 or higher under Word → Account.
Priority 5: Security Matters Even If You Skip Editing
If you plan to keep Office 2019 just for viewing files, understand the risk. Microsoft stopped patching it in 2023, leaving over 50 known vulnerabilities unresolved. Opening a document from an untrusted email could expose your Mac to malware. For safer viewing, the browser-based Office web is actually more secure since it runs sandboxed within your browser.
Businesses: Start Rollout Now
At ₹1,099 per user per month, Microsoft 365 Business Standard covers desktop apps, email hosting, and Teams. With 38 days remaining, enterprise IT teams should begin staged deployment immediately. A disrupted workforce on July 14 will cost far more than the upgrade.
