Spotify lyrics update announcement showing three new features: offline lyrics, global translations, and lyric previews

Spotify launched three significant lyrics improvements focused on accessibility and offline use, rolling out globally across iOS and Android.

The Three Major Updates

  1. Offline Lyrics (Premium Only) Premium subscribers can now access time-synced lyrics without internet connection. When you download music for offline listening, lyrics automatically save with it. This targets commuters and travelers in areas with poor connectivity (underground transit, flights at 30,000 feet). Previously, you could hear music offline but couldn’t follow along with words.
  2. Global Lyrics Translations (Free & Premium) Translation features expanded worldwide after initially launching in 25 markets in 2022. Now both free and premium users get access. A translate icon appears on lyrics cards for supported songs. Tap it to see translations in your device’s language (Spanish, French, Korean, etc.) displayed beneath original lyrics. Translations come from Musixmatch, though availability varies by track.
  3. Redesigned Lyric Previews (Free & Premium) The “Now Playing” view was redesigned to feature lyrics more prominently. Instead of requiring a swipe to see lyrics, real-time previews now appear directly under album artwork or Canvas videos. You can disable this in settings via the three-dot menu by selecting “Lyrics Off” if you prefer a cleaner interface.

Accessibility: Non-native speakers and hearing-impaired users gain better access to music meaning. Translations break down language barriers for global music discovery.

User Experience: Offline lyrics solve a major frustration – being able to play music but not sing along during commutes or flights. The feature matches what users actually need when they’ve intentionally downloaded content.

Market Competition: These updates keep Spotify competitive with Apple Music and other platforms offering similar lyrics features, particularly important as lyrics have become standard expectations rather than premium perks.

Global Reach: Making translations available to free users democratizes access and acknowledges that music consumption is increasingly international, with tracks frequently crossing language boundaries.

The changes reflect Spotify’s recognition that lyrics are now central to music streaming experience, not auxiliary features.
