Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2 brings significant updates to the Pixel 10, with the headline feature being a new “Screen automation” permission. This update marks Google’s push toward AI-powered task automation on mobile devices.
Screen Automation and AI Integration
The most notable addition is the Screen automation permission, found in Settings under Apps > Special app access. This feature powers Google’s Gemini “Computer Use” initiative, allowing the Google app (hosting Gemini) to interact with content from other apps to complete tasks automatically. Users can choose from three options: Always allow, Ask every time (the default), or Don’t allow. Currently, this feature is exclusive to the Pixel 10 and not available on the Pixel 9.
This automation capability aims to bring desktop-like workflows to mobile devices. It could eventually enable Gemini to perform complex tasks like filling forms and navigating menus across different apps. The feature includes built-in security controls requiring user consent before any automation occurs. Integration with Gemini Agent is available for AI Ultra subscribers.
Performance and System Improvements
The update delivers extensive bug fixes and performance enhancements across multiple areas. Battery drain issues have been addressed, along with improvements to both wireless and wired charging stability. Wi-Fi connectivity is stronger, and call quality has been enhanced across all carriers. The notification shade and app drawer now operate more smoothly, while display flickering issues have been resolved.
Enhanced User Experience
Navigation has become faster and more responsive, with improved gesture controls and app-switching animations. Lock screen transitions are smoother, and quick settings toggles have been optimized. Dark mode now displays more consistently across applications, and adaptive brightness has been fine-tuned. The update also brings stability improvements for foldable devices and better compatibility with enterprise applications.
Security and Connectivity Updates
Security enhancements include expanded app access controls, improved sandboxing for AI tasks, and better malware detection. The privacy dashboard has been updated with refined permission auto-reset features. Connectivity improvements span Bluetooth stability, 5G performance tuning, and enhanced dual SIM handling. The update also includes Wi-Fi 7 readiness and future satellite connectivity support.
