Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) rolled out its Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) service across India on January 1, 2026. This allows customers to make voice calls and send SMS using their regular mobile numbers over any Wi-Fi network, especially in areas with weak cellular signals like homes, basements, offices, or remote spots. No extra apps are needed—everything works through the phone’s built-in dialer and messaging apps.
Key Features and Availability
The service is free with no additional charges for Wi-Fi calls or messages, helping reduce network congestion while improving call quality. It’s available nationwide in all telecom circles, covering urban, rural, and remote areas, as long as there’s stable Wi-Fi.
VoWiFi uses IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) technology, the industry standard for services like VoLTE. This supports seamless handovers between Wi-Fi and mobile networks, so calls don’t drop when you move between zones.
User Requirements and Compatibility
To activate, users need a BSNL SIM, an active account, and a compatible modern smartphone. Simply enable “Wi-Fi Calling” in phone settings. Most recent devices from major brands support it. For issues, contact BSNL helplines or service centers.
Benefits for Customers and Network
This launch targets coverage gaps in high-rises, rural regions, or signal-poor buildings, routing voice traffic over Wi-Fi for clearer calls. It eases pressure on cellular towers by shifting data to broadband, benefiting everyone without raising bills.
