Google has responded to recent media reports suggesting that it plans to introduce advertising in its Gemini app as soon as 2026.
The company says these claims are not accurate at this time. According to Google’s Vice President of Global Ads, Dan Taylor, there are no immediate plans to place ads directly inside the main Gemini application. The company’s official AdsLiaison account also supported this clarification, stating that the reports were incorrect and misunderstood Google’s current approach.
However, Google did confirm that it is actively experimenting with ads in other AI-based products, especially within Google Search. These experiments include showing ads in “AI Mode” and placing sponsored content inside AI-generated search overviews. This means advertising is not coming to the core Gemini app right away, but Google is testing how ads might work alongside AI features in other products.
Google has spoken publicly about its long-term business strategy for AI, and advertising is expected to play a role in the future. Executives, including CEO Sundar Pichai, have hinted that the company will need different ways to earn money from AI tools as they grow. Right now, Google’s main focus for Gemini is improving the user experience and encouraging users to pay for upgraded subscription plans rather than relying on ads.
If ads are eventually introduced to Gemini or other AI products, Google says they would be designed to blend in naturally with the experience, be relevant to what the user is doing, and be clearly marked so people know they are sponsored. The pressure to consider ads comes from the high cost of running powerful AI models and the need to maintain revenue as more users shift from traditional search to AI tools.
